Rough and Ready was established in 1849 by gold miners frustrated with new federal mining regulations. One year later, they seceded from the Union to become “The Great Republic of Rough and Ready.” Unfortunately, nearby towns labeled them foreigners and denied them the right to purchase booze for a 4th of July shindig.  So, the locals quietly voted to rejoin the Union a few months later. No harm, no foul.
